Family History Service and Gene Carrier Service
What do we offer?
The team at the Royal Surrey Breast Unit run a dedicated service for patients with a high risk of developing breast cancer based on their family history. This may be based on a family history of breast, ovarian or a number of other malignancies.
This service identifies patients who are eligible for increased breast screening outside the standard NHS breast screening program. Please note this service is now offered at the Royal Surrey Hospital rather than the Jarvis Screening Center.
We follow both the NICE guidelines and the ICR/RMH protocol for assessment of risk;
We link in with the Genetics Unit at St Georges Hospital for genetic testing of appropriate patients. We run a multi disciplinary regional clinic on a monthly basis for those women who have been found to carry a significant gene mutation. This clinic is in conjunction with our Gynaecology, Plastics, Genetics and Psychology colleagues and is held at the Royal Surrey.
How to refer?
Please refer any patients who you feel meet the criteria to the Family History clinic via the ERS system and they will be triaged to a family history clinic. If they meet the requirements for genetic testing then we will arrange this in conjunction with St Georges Genetics Unit. Appropriate imaging will be arranged from that clinic.
If you have a patient with a known genetic mutation, for example who has moved to the area, then please refer with as much detail as possible via the ERS and we will make the appropriate arrangements for them to be seen either in the family history clinic or the monthly genetics clinic as appropriate.
